Bonnie
Doon

I have no idea where the name of this
beach came from but I am sure it is not the proper local name.
The beach was just across the bay from the Loloho port where a
large number of PMG staff worked. I was lucky enough to get across
there twice during my deployment. The easiest way to get over to
the island was to jump in one of the zodiac or small dinghy and
go across the bay (see image)
The were a number of huts inland
from the beach and at times I believe people were allowed to stay
over night. There had been an armed grouped of men who stole a
generator so while I was there you could not stay overnight.
Goggles, snorkels and fins were
available from LST so snorkeling was popular. Bonnie Doon had a
fantastic coral outcrop only metres from the beach. The sand was
pure white and very fine - I'd have to rate it better than most
aussie beaches.
One of the 360 degree photos and
the photo at the top of the page was taken while sitting on an
inner tube floating offshore so I could get the whole beach in
the photo. It was a bit of a risk as electronics and water don't
mix.
Google Earth has a really good
picture of Bonnie Doon and you can almost see the Sac Sacs near
the beach - follow the link below.
